IPL PhotoRejuvinaton

Many of our patients ask us about broken capillaries and redness on their face, neck, chest and back of their hands. Often this is due to sun damaged skin. This is often accompanied by brown pigmented lesions, such as age spots or freckles. Recently light based therapies have been evolved to better treat sun damaged skin with a procedure know as IPL photorejuvination. Photorejuvination is a gentle light based treatment for redness, brown spots and fine wrinkles that occur with sun damage. This no-downtime procedure is appropriate for the face (often called the photo-facial) but also for the chest, neck and hands -anywhere that sun damage shows. Photo Rejunenation is a non-ablative, non-invasive procedure, in other words, the surface of the skin is not damaged or removed. This quick outpatient procedure can correct pigmentation irregularities (both red and brown) and encourage new collagen growth to smooth out existing facial wrinkles.

What is IPL PhotoRejuvination?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology is a treatment breakthrough that can correct a variety of benign skin imperfections that occur as a result of aging and sun exposure. This includes the signs of photo-aging, such as the small red or purple veins that occur on the face, neck and other sun exposed areas such as the chest. These red and purple discolorations often occur along with brown pigment changes, such as sun spots or freckles. The Photorejuvination technique offers a safe, non-invasive solution that can be tailored to your individual condition and skin type, providing superior cosmetic results and outstanding satisfaction.

    What it does?
  • Improves rosacea, broken blood vessels, red and blue facial veins
  • Reduces facial wrinkles and fine lines
  • Treats sun damage, including age spots and brown pigmentation
  • No recovery time, return to activities immediately
  • Safe for face, chest, neck and hands - anywhere sun damage shows

How does IPL work?
At Inovia we utilize the Palomar Star LUX 500 to deliver the Intense Pulsed Light. The Palomar system filters light from different parts of the light spectrum. Each band of the spectrum has a wavelength that is ideal for different treatments, such as sun spot removal and vessel clearance. The light is absorbed by the pigment in sun spots and the blood in visible vessels, and converted to heat. The heat dissolves the cells that create the pigment and shrinks the vessels. We can focus on specific facial veins or pigmented lesions, or a more generalized procedure can be carried out know as the PhotoFacial for the face only or PhotoRejuvination when this is used more broadly on the neck, chest, back of the hands or other locations where sun damaged skin is an issue. IPL can also be used for permanent hair reduction.

The PhotoFacial

Photofacial treatments have the unique capability to treat multiple symptoms of aging skin on your entire face in each treatment session, non ablative fashion in a quick, relatively painless no down time office based procedure. With this procedure we can treat fine lines, red blemishes, mottled coloration, broken blood vessels, pigment discoloration (such as freckles and age spots, enlarged pores, coarse or rough skin, loss of skin tone and elasticity, and general sun damage). The result is a more youthful, smooth and revitalized facial appearance. We can also focus the IPL to treat brown spots, discolored areas, and other telltale signs of aging on your hands, chest, and neck.

How does IPL PhotoRejuvination work?
Intense pulsed light release precisely controlled strong pulses of filtered light that are absorbed by the abnormal surface blood vessels and pigmented lesions in the photodamaged skin, heating it to a point where it is destroyed. Following treatment the vessels quickly clear and are re-absorbed by the body, leaving little or no trace of the original lesion

How is the procedure performed?
You will be asked to put on goggles to protect your eyes. A layer of chilled gel is applied to the area to guide the light into the skin. The area will also be cooled to increase comfort during treatment. The light guide is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released. The applicator is then moved to the neighboring area of skin and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated. The chilled gel is removed and the area moisturized

How many treatments will I need?
This will be assessed at your initial consultation. A series of treatments can effectively improve facial redness, brown pigmentation and flushing in fair-skinned individuals. Typically 1 - 6 treatments are done three weeks apart. The procedure is nearly painless so it can be done without the need for anesthesia or after simply applying a topical numbing cream to the skin.

How much down time will I need after each treatment?
In contrast to other treatments, Photorejuvination is non ablative, thus the treatment does not remove your skin, so there is no downtime for healing; simply apply makeup and go back to work. You may experience redness and mild swelling. You can expect to see a gradual decrease in overall redness, flushing and dilated capillaries.

What sort of results can I anticipate?
You will see gradual improvement from each session resulting in a dramatic improvement by the end of your treatment program. Results are long lasting and a maintenance program of one treatment every 90 days is suggested.

Permanent Hair Reduction
IPL can be used for permanent hair reduction as well. Intense pulsed light systems release precisely controlled strong pulses of filtered light that are absorbed by melanin, the pigment in hair. This heats up the hair and destroys the cells responsible for hair growth, to achieve long term hair reduction. Only hair in the active growth stage of the growth cycle is affected, therefore multiple treatments are needed. Treatment is conducted every 2-8 weeks, depending on the site treated, until a satisfactory result is seen. The number of treatments required varies, but typically 6 or more treatments are required for maximum results. Treatments can take from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on which area is being treated. Call for a consultation and we can discuss the treatments available and the expected results.

Treatment of Pigmented Lesions
Melanin is the dark pigment present in skin and is produced by melanocytes, usually in response to sun damage. Pigmented lesions occur when an abundance of melanocytes are found in the skin. When dark pigment multiplies, it forms freckles, brown age spots and moles. The mechanism of pigmented lesion removal is based upon selective destruction of melanocytes and melanosome-containing epidermal keratinocytes. The lesion darkens and crusts after treatment, and is naturally sloughed off the skin within two weeks.

Laser Spider Vein Treatments
The experts at the Inovia Vein Specialty Center can help you choose the best treatment for your veins. We employ the Palomar 1064 Nd:Yag laser selectively to treat certain spider veins. The 1064 nm wavelength of the spectrum is ideal for targeting blood vessels, from leg veins of 3-4 mm to more superficial vascular lesions. The Palomar Lux1064 Nd:YAG Handpiece delivers light in this wavelength at fluences up to 700 J/cm2, for powerful vessel clearance. The energy heats the hemoglobin within the vessel, causing the vessel walls to constrict. The vessel then shrinks and fades from view. The absorption of pulsed light in oxyhemoglobin, de-oxyhemoglobin, and the resultant thermal action inside the blood vessels results in intraluminal coagulation, vasoconstriction, and damage to the vessel endothelial lining, all of which contribute to the degeneration and disappearance of any visible vessels. Lux1064 leg vein treatments are the most comfortable available, thanks to Palomar's patented cooling technologies.
